The Pythia Project: Artificial Intelligence and Good Practices for Service Innovation

On Thursday, November 16, 2023, the Pythia workshop on chatbot technology was held with great success. The aim of the workshop was to foster a constructive discussion on the new trends in artificial intelligence and digital assistants (chatbots), to present the findings of the Pythia project and the implementations of digital assistants carried out during the project.

The event was held in person and attendance was high, with over 250 participants. Among the participants were executives from the Public and Private sector, members of the academic community, representatives of institutions, etc.

Mr. Georgios Karamanolis, Co-founder CTO/CIO of Crowdpolicy, opened the workshop. He spoke about artificial intelligence, new trends, the company’s experience around the implementation of automated digital assistants (Intelligent Chatbots), as well as the important innovation network of Crowdpolicy, which counts 11 years of business activity.

Mr. Yannis Charalabidis, Professor at the University of the Aegean and Coordinator of the Pythia project, briefly presented the importance of the promotion of artificial intelligence in a wider context as well as the value of synergies between organizations for the production of significant research results for society and the economy.

Then, the Mayor of Platanias of Chania, Mr. Ioannis Malandrakis, addressed a short greeting and emphasized the added value of the implementation of the Municipality’s Automated Digital Assistant — which is the first Chatbot implementation in a Greek Municipality — on the citizen engagement and communication.

Then, Ms. Eleni Petra, Scientific Associate, Head of the Innovation Unit for Women at “Athena” Research Center, made a short presentation highlighting the importance of using artificial intelligence and the developments in chatbot technology.

Mr. Haris Alexopoulos, Assistant Professor at the University of the Aegean, talked about the importance of taking advantage of new trends in the field of artificial intelligence and the development of digital assistants serving society and citizens.

Mr. Nikolaos Yarelis and Mr. Elias Siachos, PhD Candidates from the University of Patras, referred to artificial intelligence as a means for development and evolution in all sectors of society and the economy.

The talks were followed by presentations of the pilots implemented in the context of the project by:

  • Ms. Marianthi Psoma, Head of Online Citizen Service Department, General Secretariat of Information Systems & Digital Governance
  • Mr. Yannis Georgoulakis, Head of RnD SoftΟne
  • Maria Theofanopoulou, CEO, Greek Travel Pages (GTP)
  • Ms. Georgia Zevgaropoulou from the Digital Transformation Division of National Bank of Greece

Finally, Mr. Giorgos Kougianos, Project Manager of Crowdpolicy, and Mr. Haris Alexopoulos, Assistant Professor at the University of the Aegean, made a presentation of the results of the pilots’ evaluation and the account of the Pythia project, followed by an interactive discussion with questions and answers on the next steps in chatbot technology.
